How to make a holiday hours sign

  1. Pick a sign. Closed for Thanksgiving, Closed for Christmas, Christmas Eve hours, Closed New Year's Day, a holiday hours table, a Black Friday sale sign or another holiday.
  2. Add your business name so customers know the notice is current and official.
  3. Check the date line. Each sign fills in the 2026 date for you. Type your own date to change it.
  4. List your hours, one day per line, such as "Wed Nov 25: 9am – 3pm." Leave it blank for a simple closed sign.
  5. Choose a full page for the front door or two half-page signs for the door and the register.
  6. Print at 100% scale with Background graphics on, or save it as a PDF for a print shop.

The sign is built in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our server. Need a register notice about cash rounding too? Make one with the penny rounding sign generator.

Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, so Black Friday is the day after. Post your sign about a week before the holiday so regular customers see it on their last visit.

What to write on a holiday closed sign

A good closed sign answers three questions: when are you closed, when do you reopen, and where can customers get help meanwhile.

  • Closed for Thanksgiving: "Closed Thursday, November 26. We reopen Friday at 7am. Happy Thanksgiving!"
  • Closing early: "Christmas Eve hours: 8am – 2pm. Closed Christmas Day."
  • Holiday hours table: list each day from the week before the holiday to the day after, including the days you keep regular hours, so nothing is left to guess.
  • Online options: add "Order online any time at" and your web address if you take orders while closed.

Keep the message short. People read door signs from several feet away, so the headline and date matter most.

Black Friday sale signs

Choose Black Friday sale and type your offer, such as "30% off storewide" or "Buy one, get one." The offer prints in very large type under the headline. Use the hours box for early opening times, for example "Fri Nov 27: 6am – 10pm."

State the terms honestly: if the deal is limited to stock on hand or certain items, say so in the message line. Print two half-page signs to put one on the door and one at the checkout.

Printing tips and notes

  • Use card stock or slip the sign into a sheet protector so it survives taping and rain.
  • Pick Black and white to save ink; the sign still reads clearly from a distance.
  • Tape it at eye level on the door, facing out, with a second copy by the register.
  • Update your online listings to match the sign. Customers often check a map listing before leaving home.
  • Take the sign down the day after the holiday so it doesn't confuse later shoppers.
  • Save a PDF and reuse it next year after changing the dates.
