How to make printable gift tags

  1. Pick a tag. A mixed sheet prints one of each design. Or choose a single message for all eight tags, including "Gift not included" and "Do not open until Dec 25."
  2. Type your own words with My own words for any holiday or occasion.
  3. Add To and From names, or leave them blank to write on each tag by hand.
  4. Pick a shape and color. Black and white saves ink and looks good on kraft paper.
  5. Print at 100% scale on card stock, cut along the dashed lines and punch the hole.

What is a "gift not included" tag?

A "gift not included" tag is a joke tag. People tie it to an empty box, a box of something silly, or the outside of a gift bag before revealing the real present. It also works on a card that holds cash or a gift card, since the "gift" is the money inside.

  • Prank box: wrap an empty box with the tag, then hand over the real gift after the laugh.
  • Cash gifts: pair it with a printable money envelope.
  • White elephant swaps: a great tag for a decoy box.

The tag's small line reads "but the thought definitely is," so it stays friendly.

How to cut and attach gift tags

  1. Print on card stock (65 to 110 lb) so the tags don't tear.
  2. Cut along the dashed outline. Scissors work; a paper trimmer is faster for straight edges.
  3. Punch the circle with a hole punch, or poke a hole with a pencil tip.
  4. Thread ribbon, twine or string through the hole and tie it around the gift, or tape the tag flat on the wrapping paper.

Each tag is about 3.6 by 2.3 inches, a standard size that fits on most boxes and bags.

Gift tag ideas for every occasion

  • Christmas: Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Do not open until Dec 25, or From Santa with the To line filled in.
  • Birthdays: Happy Birthday with the child's name, or a custom tag such as "Happy 7th Birthday."
  • Thank you gifts: teachers, coaches, neighbors and hosts.
  • Other holidays: use My own words for Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy New Year or Get well soon.
  • Party favors: print a full sheet of Thank you tags for goodie bags.

Tips and notes

  • Print a mixed sheet first to see which designs you like, then print full sheets of your favorite.
  • Leave names blank so one sheet works for the whole family.
  • Use "Do not open until Dec 25" on gifts that arrive early or sit under the tree for weeks.
  • Kraft card stock with the black and white style gives a rustic look.
  • Match your wrapping: pick red or green for Christmas, blue for winter or pink for birthdays.
