How to use the cash stuffing planner

  1. List your categories, one per line, with the monthly amount after a colon, such as "Groceries: 400."
  2. Choose how often you are paid. The tracker splits each budget evenly across your paychecks, so you know exactly how much cash to put in each envelope on payday.
  3. Check the summary under the preview: the monthly total and the cash to withdraw each payday.
  4. Print the tracker to tick off each envelope as you stuff it, or print envelope labels to stick on your envelopes.

Need the envelopes themselves? Print budget envelopes with a spending log on the money envelope template page.

Cash stuffing category ideas

Cash works best for spending that changes from month to month and that you tend to overspend on. Bills paid automatically are usually left out.

Common cash envelope categories
GroupCategories
EverydayGroceries, gas, household supplies, personal care, pharmacy
LifestyleDining out, coffee, fun money, entertainment, hobbies, clothing
FamilyKids' activities, school lunches, allowance, pets, babysitting
Saving (sinking funds)Gifts, holidays, car repairs, vacation, birthdays, annual fees

Start with five to eight categories. You can split one later if it gets too broad. Saving categories can move to a sinking funds tracker.

How cash stuffing works

Cash stuffing is envelope budgeting with real cash. On payday you withdraw your spending money and split it into labeled envelopes, one per category. When the dining-out envelope is empty, dining out is done until next payday.

  • Budget first: decide each category's monthly amount from your take-home pay after bills.
  • Split by paycheck: paid twice a month? Put half of each budget in on each payday.
  • Spend from the envelope and log purchases so you know what's left.
  • Count at month end with the cash count sheet and roll leftovers into savings or next month.

Example: a $1,000 monthly cash budget

Here is how a household paid twice a month might split $1,000 of variable spending:

Example cash stuffing budget, paid twice a month
CategoryMonthlyPer paycheck
Groceries$450$225
Gas$160$80
Dining out$100$50
Household$80$40
Personal care$60$30
Fun money$100$50
Gifts$50$25

Tips for cash stuffing

  • Round budgets to amounts you can withdraw, such as $20 bills, and keep a few small bills for change.
  • Keep only spending money in cash. Savings is safer in a bank account.
  • Review after one month and move money between categories that ran short or had leftovers.
  • Use a binder or wallet with zipper pockets so envelopes don't wear out.
  • Pair it with a challenge: try a no spend challenge to see which categories you can shrink.

Cash stuffing FAQ

What are good cash stuffing categories?

Spending that varies and is easy to overspend: groceries, gas, dining out, household, personal care, fun money, gifts and pets. Bills paid automatically usually stay out of the envelopes.

How do I split a budget by paycheck?

Divide each category's monthly budget by the number of paychecks. The tracker does this for you, so $400 for groceries paid twice a month means $200 each payday.

How many cash envelopes should I have?

Most people start with five to eight. Fewer envelopes are easier to keep up with; add more once the habit sticks.

What do I do with leftover cash at the end of the month?

Count it, then either roll it into the same envelope for next month, move it to a savings goal or sinking fund, or use it to pay down debt. Decide the rule before you start so leftovers don't become fun money.

Is the cash stuffing printable free?

Yes. The tracker and labels are free to print with no account, and nothing you type is sent to our server.

Should bills go in cash envelopes?

Usually not. Rent, utilities and loans are easier and safer to pay from the bank. Cash envelopes work best for flexible spending like groceries, gas and fun money.
